Most of us have a few ideas for what we want to do in life. The road is rarely straight, but this month's Woman in Control shows us that you can find a way to include your many interests, even if it looks different than a traditional path. From early thoughts of becoming a veterinarian or lawyer, our feature this month gets to spend her day expressing love to animals, while orchestrating contracts and producing video content for the world's largest brands. Meet Mared.
Tell us about yourself?
I’m bay area native currently working as a video producer at Mac House Productions. I work on all sorts of creative projects ranging from nonprofit to television commercials, to music festivals, and more.
What does being a woman in control mean to you?
Working in a completely male-dominated industry, being a woman in control means a lot to me. It’s being able to feel confident and empowered in the choices you make, and not letting others dictate what you can or cannot do. It is trusting yourself to make things happen and knowing that each and every obstacle can be overcome.
What inspired you to chose your career? And what continues to drive you?
Going into college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future. I had considered law school, veterinary studies, and then I eventually stumbled across my love for video production. The ability to constantly create is a satisfaction unlike any other. To sit back at the end of it all and see something I was a part of have such an emotional impact on someone- to make them smile, laugh, or even cry is so powerful to me.
How did you become part of Mac House Productions?
I had been freelancing for about a year when I decided I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. I wanted to get my hands in larger, more creative projects, so I began reaching out to companies. I happened upon a craigslist ad looking for creatives and I remember how excited I was to see the amazing work this company was doing. They messaged me back, and from the moment I walked through the doors I knew it was going to be a special place.
How has Mac House Productions helped you become the woman you are today?
I have grown so much as a person at this company. In what seems like both a short time and forever, the 3+ years I have put in at Mac House have taught me many things. One of the most important things is being able to have confidence in yourself and realizing that no project is too big.
What about Juno, what effect does he have in your life?
Juno lights up my life - I don’t know what I would do without him! He keeps me grounded through all the madness that is production life. He is with me every day at the office, and loves to snuggle up under my workstation. If work gets overwhelming, we take a break and go on a walk, then come back in and get right back to it.
What are some of your favorite projects you have worked on so far and why?
My favorite projects are ones that I can really delve deep into and put all my time and energy into. Some projects I need to plan/coordinate/deliver all in a week’s time, but really spending a month or two planning, getting creative, and figuring out how to make the most beautiful images is much more rewarding in the end. A holiday commercial spot I did for Raley’s and a recent Facebook project fall into this category.

If you could say one thing to a young girl encouraging her to be a woman in control, what would you say?
I would say that everything is what you make it. Make the most of any and every opportunity and use the experiences you gain to work towards your goals in life. Nothing is out of reach, and never let anyone discourage you from your dreams.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the LIA LARREA brand?
I really love the versatility of it all! I feel like so many of the pieces are well thought out to blend both fashion and function- which is so important to any woman in control. Being able to utilize one piece of clothing or an accessory in multiple ways adds a whole other dimension to the product.
