This month’s Woman in Control is transforming the way we eat, the way we feel, and all with the mantra “made with love”. Read on to learn how she's building the "food for wellness" delivery startup Methodology, her unique definition of "success", the power of a smile, and how she lives her dream, one day at a time. Meet Julie!

Tell us about yourself?

I feel like my calling in life is to help people feel better about themselves and hopefully entertain them in the process, by creating something that brings them joy.

What inspired you to create Methodology?

Learning how to eat the right food for my body totally transformed my life. Just realizing that I could feel vibrant, strong, and confident every day by picking better foods was eye opening to me. I want to make it easy for women everywhere to have this realization -- that they can and deserve to feel better than just “okay.”

What does being a woman in control mean to you?

To me being a woman in control is realizing that you can’t control anything in life except for how you respond to it. My startup has taught me that. Rather than always trying to plan everything and focus narrowly on specific goals, I now set the intention of staying flexible and open and trusting that if we put love into what we do, things will work out.

How would you describe happiness and the power of a smile?

Happiness is loving what you have and what happens, no matter what, because you trust that in the long run everything is going to be okay. And smiling is the best! It makes you feel better when you do it, and it makes people who see you smiling feel instantly better. What a simple way to spread happiness.

"Living your dream life means going after what calls to you, whether or not you “succeed.”"

What does “made with love” mean to you?

To me this means loving our clients and loving the effort we put into serving them. Which translates into feeding them like they’re family and doing everything we can to make sure that the service we provide them is actually making their lives meaningfully better.

How would you describe “food for wellness”?

Food for wellness is eating the foods that make you feel best, not just doing what some Instagram star is doing. It’s taking the time to understand how your body responds to specific foods. It’s prioritizing foods that are whole and nourishing over foods that are less nourishing. It’s finding the right balance so that you don’t feel deprived. It’s taking the time to define for yourself what it means to eat well.

If you could say one thing to a young girl encouraging her to be a woman in control, what would you say?

Never underestimate your power! Anything you can clearly envision you can bring to life if you love your vision enough and are willing to work your ass off. Many women don’t raise their hands for additional projects or responsibilities because they think they aren’t ready yet. We’re never truly ready for that next step in our lives. We just need to take it and learn from it because living your dream life means going after what calls to you, whether or not you “succeed.”

How have you been able to achieve your goals and empowered yourself to start your own business?

By believing that in myself, by asking for and getting lots of help from others, by focusing on my goals and avoiding distractions, and by breaking huge tasks up into small manageable pieces that I tackle one day at a time.

What are some of your favorite aspects of the LIA LARREA brand?

I love that it’s flattering yet perfectly comfortable and that I can dress it up more than your typical “activewear.” I don’t want to look like on my way to or from a gym when that isn’t actually the case. I want freedom of movement and style. Lia Larrea gets this!
