Life sends us all kinds of opportunities, and this month's Woman in Control shows us that a combination of relationship building and hard work will always set you up for a successful next step. A true renaissance woman and proud mother, we're excited to introduce, Seline.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I'm an entrepreneur, a successful business woman, a small business advisor, a realtor, a tv host, producer, and screenwriter for California Scenes on Bay Area's Comcast TV15, and the best job yet, a mom of two wonderful children! I believe that a healthy body and mind are a must, and finding balance is key to a happy life.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER? WHAT CONTINUES TO DRIVE YOU?
I grew up in a small business family of ten siblings and hard working immigrant parents. I started working when I was ten years old by helping them run their restaurants and other small businesses. This taught me to have a strong work ethic and a drive to keep going from early on.
When you work as a team things are easier to do, and later it becomes who you are- you are self-driven. You see results, rewards, and you keep at it!
My careers have chosen me, or as I should say-fate. I originally thought I wanted to become a flight attendant when I was 6 because I wanted to travel the world. After learning more about what it would entail I changed my aspiration into acting.
I fell upon banking at 16 years old, proofing teller’s and atm’s mistakes. I was able to do this because I finished my classes early and I chose early career planning as my elective. However, it was my chemistry teacher who approached me to work with his wife who was VP at the bank. Thus later, I was promoted after I finished college, to being a District Business Officer and Premier Banking Manager at the age of 21, prior to going into my own business of real estate and finance.
These jobs made me become more attentive to details, giving the utmost high level of service, being compassionate, a people person and a driven strong individual. They opened new doors, and in life taking calculated risk to running my own team and business.
It goes back to old traditional values with my parents, coming from parents of a third world country, having to work hard to get where we are-and what we become today.
TELL US ABOUT PITCH GLOBALLY AND HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED.
I was spot on from co hosting another tech event, when I was asked to join in hosting monthly tech event. Founded last year, it has become one of VCs’ Startup Successful event in the bay area. We continue to have monthly events today and are asked to collaborate with other teams or companies.
HOW HAS HOSTING PITCH GLOBALLY CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON START UP COMPANIES?
I am so inspired by these amazing, talented startups entrepreneurs with their dreams, passions, creativities are put into a pitch to raise company’s seed money today! It motivates me to make things happen! Not to just dream, but making it happen. Taking chances, live that dream fully! Sky is really the limit!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE PITCHING THEIR DREAM?
Follow your passions and your gut, and sell sell sell until sold!
I love Steve Job’s advice, that I follow and give to others: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” So True!
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY?
I was working with an old lawyer boyfriend at his firm, who was also a real estate broker, inspired and influenced me to become a realtor. A hard money lender/broker came into the bank each week with her big checks and asked me to join their company. From financing, real estate became my business later.
HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE AMERICAN DREAM OF HOMEOWNERSHIP AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE?
Looking back, I am amazed. I became a million dollar home buyer in my young twenties. I formed my own teams and then partnerships with others, I networked successfully, making
friends everywhere….so it’s true as they say, know people. Know how to work people and teams.
It didn’t stop there. I continued venturing onto monopolizing real estate properties, purchasing multiple homes and managing them along the way. I was lucky to learn real estate early in my life. This helped financed my other passions today, and I’m so thankful.
I must say, it wasn't smooth sailing, but worth it. I had to go through a lengthy process that included extensive financial paperwork, verification, and more than any traditional lending. They couldn’t believe that a young person could do it without gifts from parents or help. I am proud of it and I hope that I can inspire others to do so at a young age. It wasn't about the dollar amount or cost of the home, but one's belief in hard work, perseverance, ambition, and the drive to succeed and accomplish your goals.
HOW DO YOUR SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES ALLOW YOU TO GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
I have to say, my love for people, a good heart, great energy and volunteering my time giving back to the community via tv hosting. I am able to speak out and promote others, and share their stories. I also keep the community abreast with fresh news, entertainment, technology, shows, and all that the Bay Area’s community enjoys.
WHAT DOES BEING A WOMAN IN CONTROL MEAN TO YOU?
Being a woman in control, to me means being confident and true to yourself. Give time to you first. Know who you are and what you are capable of....and push and challenge yourself.
It also means being confident, knowing and understanding your being, and learning to let go of control. Being a mom has taught me to understand this. Many of us want the affirmation of power and controlling everything around us. I believe if we learn how to let go of some control, we can create success and happiness all around.
HAVING TWO KIDS, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE YOUR WORK LIFE, ESPECIALLY IN THE TELEVISION INDUSTRY?
On top of balancing my demanding work schedule with two children's ongoing activities and sports, television plays an incredible part in my daily life. My children give me creativity and they teach how to make tv interesting and engaging for my audience. I would bring my kids to work with me at times, watching me on the sideline and cheering me on. They give me advice that is honest, and even if it hurts it’s good. This has also inspired my 11 year old son to make his own film, youtube videos of his day and interests, and my daughter to speak confidently in public, as she was a shy one in public. When all is hectic, I turn to meditation, yoga, swimming, running and staying calm. Finding the time for yourself keeps that balance.
IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO A YOUNG GIRL ENCOURAGING HER TO BE A WOMAN IN CONTROL, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
I would say to young girls, look up to your mom, listen to her words of advice, be inspired, learn everything the old fashion way from her and take it to heart. Ask many questions, be inquisitive, be silly, laugh at yourself, make mistakes, trust your intuition and gut, don't give up, be hungry, and always be yourself. It will be instilled in you as you grow and continue to be challenged with new information.
